A Message From Principal Clarke

Dear Beech Tree Families,

I am excited to share some wonderful highlights from the past week. Our 3rd-grade students and teachers had an enriching experience on Thursday during their field trip to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. The trip provided hands-on learning opportunities in social studies and science, particularly in areas such as ancient Egypt and the ecosystem. The exhibits were captivating, bringing their classroom studies to life.

Our week concluded with the PTA Talent Show last night, which was a remarkable event. It was heartwarming to witness the diverse talents of our students, from piano playing to dancing, singing, comedy, and more. Our Beavers truly shone brightly, showcasing their skills and fearlessness. Thank you for coming out and supporting this event. It was great seeing so many of you in attendance.

During our first week of Beech Days, we enjoyed seeing families lunch with their students. Next Friday concludes Beech Days for the month of February. However, next week's newsletter will entail March's Beech Days dates, so be on the lookout.

Looking ahead to spring, we have many exciting school events to anticipate as a community. I will readily keep you updated. Let us continue to support and celebrate our students as they learn and grow.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

With appreciation,

Principal Clarke

After being seen by the PHN or SHA in the Health Room, students sent home, due to a fever of 100.4 or greater and/or COVID-19 respiratory symptoms (cough, sore throat, runny nose), may return to school when the student is fever-free without fever reducing medication for at least 24 hours and symptoms have improved.

Refer to FCPS Attendance Guidance for more information.

🚪Check-Outs

Please remember you must sign your student out in the main office. All student exchanges and contact must go through the office.  You will need to sign them out on the "Sign out Binder" located in the office.  Be prepared to show your photo ID when you arrive. The front office will not call for students prior to parents arrival for pickup. Thanks for your cooperation in making sure our student population is safe while at school!

A Message From Principal Clarke

Dear Beech Tree Families,

We would like to take a moment to express our gratitude for the wonderful Valentine's Day celebration that took place at our school. The students and staff members came together to spread love and kindness by exchanging cards and tokens of appreciation.

Our school counselor was particularly touched by the outpouring of affection and received many extra hugs from grateful students. It was heartening to see so many people coming together to share their feelings of appreciation and gratitude.

As a friendly reminder, please note that our school will be closed on Monday, February 19th, in observance of the President's Day holiday. We will resume classes on Tuesday, February 20th, and we look forward to continuing our journey of learning and growth with all of our students and staff members.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

With appreciation,

Principal Clarke

Beech Days Lunch Visitation Schedule

Ms. Keier and Ms. Ileqmane students learned about Mardi Gras and what a Second Line is – a parade with jazz music, dancing and celebrating that people join in as they go through the streets. Second Lines often pop up in predominantly African American neighborhoods in New Orleans and originated from West African circle or ring dances. They were brought to New Orleans by enslaved Africans. I connected this with Black History month by learning about famous jazz musicians like Trombone Shorty, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Louis Armstrong and Jazzy Ash. We celebrated with our own parade with masks, beads and jazz music!

As a reminder, all schools and offices will be closed on Monday, February 19, 2024 for the Presidents Day holiday. Learn more about Presidents Day in Britannica.com. Classes will resume on Tuesday, February 20.

Fiscal Year 2025 Proposed Budget Focused on Educational Excellence and Competitive Compensation

At the last School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid proposed a budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 that focuses on excellence and providing students an equitable education in an inclusive and respectful environment, where access, opportunity, and achievement are available to all.

The budget also prioritizes competitive compensation to attract and retain a world-class workforce.

The FY 2025 Proposed Budget totals $3.8 billion, an increase of $301.8 million, or 8.6%, over the FY 2024 Approved Budget. Nearly 86% of the budget is focused on instruction. Key highlights include:

  • Supporting students academically by maintaining existing class size formulas and providing necessary support to all students.
  • Retaining and attracting world-class educators with a 6% market scale adjustment.
  • Strengthening student well-being outside of the classroom with expanded athletics offerings, additional athletic trainers, and enhanced stipends for fine and performing arts.
  • Continuing initiatives including expansion of inclusive preschool, adoption of green initiatives, and funding assistant director of student activities positions previously funded with ESSER III.

Special education daily contract extensions, funding for the safety and security screening program, and late buses to support academics and activities at middle schools are several of the priorities to be addressed at the end of FY 2024.

The School Board is scheduled to adopt the Advertised Budget on Thursday, February 22. Read more about the proposed budget. Keep up with FCPS’ budget development process

Eating Disorders Parent Information, Gr. 5-12

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.

Beech Days are special weeks designated each month where we welcome you to partake in a nutritious school meal alongside your student(s). We encourage family members to enjoy the same lunch as their child, whether it's a packed lunch or from the school cafeteria. To maintain the integrity of our meal program, we kindly request refraining from bringing fast food options.

A Message From Principal Clarke

Dear Beech Tree Families,

As we navigate the winter months, our students have been enthusiastically immersing themselves in the wonders of hibernation and the incredible adaptations animals undergo to survive this season. Through a myriad of hands-on activities and engaging lessons, they have embarked on a journey of discovery that has ignited their curiosity and appreciation for the natural world.

In a vibrant display of unity, our school recently participated in National Wear Red Day to champion heart health awareness. Both students and staff joined forces, dressed in bold red attire to raise awareness and show solidarity for this crucial cause. Witnessing our school community unite in support of such an important health initiative was truly heartwarming.

This past week marked the kickoff of Black History Month at Beech Tree. Throughout the month, we will take the opportunity to celebrate and honor the achievements, milestones, and contributions of African Americans to our nation's rich history. Our dedicated educators have prepared engaging activities and lessons to ensure our students learn about the inspiring individuals who have helped shape our world.

Next week February 5th to 9th, we will be celebrating National School Counselor Appreciation Week. This is a special time to express our gratitude to the wonderful Ms. Diamond Torres, our school counselor. Ms. Torres plays a pivotal role in supporting our students' academic, social, and emotional well-being. Her dedication, empathy, and tireless efforts are truly commendable. Please join me in extending a heartfelt thank you to Ms. Torres for all that she does to make a positive impact on our school community.

Upcoming Events and Important Dates:

  • School Counselor Spirit Week will be February 5th -9th. Please review the themes for each day.
  • Wednesday folders will contain information regarding the upcoming Science Olympiad. This is a before-school club for 3rd and 4th grade students that will begin February 29th. The club will only allow 16 participants. Additional information will be sent home in the Wednesday folders.

Reminders and Announcements:

  • School will be closed on Monday, February 19th as we honor President’s Day.

We value the partnership between our school and families. If you have any suggestions, concerns, or if there's anything you would like to discuss, please do not hesitate to reach out. Your support is crucial to the success of our students and our school community. Together, we can create an environment that fosters learning, growth, and success for every student at Beech Tree Elementary School.

Wishing you a wonderful month ahead!

Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

With appreciation,

Principal Clarke

🚍 Here Comes the Bus

Want to know if your child's bus is on schedule or where the bus is? Here Comes the Bus® is an easy-to-use website and app that enables parents to see the location of their child’s school bus — almost in real time — on a smartphone, tablet, or personal computer.

Parents can track multiple buses if their children don’t all ride the same bus; know exactly when children arrive at school or the bus stop; and receive customized text and/or email notifications about bus locations, schedule changes, or delays.

To get started, download the app from the Apple iOS or Android app store. Check out the Here Comes the Bus and Frequently Asked Questions webpages for more information.

Already using the Here Comes the Bus app? Send your feedback to [email protected].

Note: eNotify text messaging will continue to be used for reporting bus delays and bus incidents.

A Message From Principal Clarke

Dear Beech Tree Families,

We hope you are enjoying this Friday with unseasonably warm spring-like temperatures! It's hard to believe that schools were closed last week, and children were outside playing in the snow.

As a friendly reminder, please remember that the third quarter is set to begin on Monday, January 29th. Our teachers are finalizing grades. Second-quarter grades will be available on Monday, February 5th, through SIS ParentVue. This is a great opportunity to remind students about the importance of attending school and working their best while being respectful and responsible citizens.

February promises to bring us more great opportunities to learn and have fun together as the 100th day of school is approaching. We look forward to celebrating this milestone on February 8th. We are proud of the progress our students have made in their learning and growth and we cannot wait to see what the next 100 days will bring! Our virtual PTA meeting is scheduled for February 1st and the PTA Talent Show will be held on February 22nd. We have plenty of reasons to celebrate and come together as a community. Enjoy your weekend. We will see you on Monday!

Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

With appreciation,

Principal Clarke
