A Message From Principal Clarke

Dear Beech Tree Families,

We hope that everyone was able to find a little sunshine amongst some very overcast weather this week. We had sunny days in our halls while the students worked their hardest during SOL's and classwork. We are always so proud of how each student shows up to demonstrate their knowledge.

We wish everyone a wonderful weekend. We are grateful for your support as we work diligently to wrap-up the school year. Thank you to every mom, dad, grandparent, and extended family members who support our students' endeavors. We and they could not do it without you!

Thank you for your partnership in education.

With appreciation,

Principal Clarke

As the 2023-2024 school year is coming to a close, the Beech Tree staff is starting to prepare for the 2024-2025 school year. Class placement is one of the most important tasks that our staff engage in during the last weeks of school. In this process, we consider many things, such as heterogeneous groupings, balancing academic abilities, and maximizing the support our resource teachers can provide students.

If you feel that there is pertinent information to support your child’s success, please complete this optional Class Placement Input Form by Friday, May 17th. Please note that this system is not intended for families to request specific teachers. Your child’s current classroom teacher, specialists, counselors, and administrators will collaborate to make well-balanced classes. We value and consider your insight into your child’s learning needs.

A Message From Principal Clarke

Dear Beech Tree Families,

Our halls are buzzing with the energy of students as they dive into SOL (Standards of Learning) testing. It is a time of both challenge and opportunity. I am continually impressed by the dedication and perseverance displayed by our students. Their commitment to academic excellence is evident as they strive to showcase their knowledge and skills during this testing season.

In addition to the academic focus, our school recently had the pleasure of hosting our annual Spring Concert. It was a beautiful celebration of talent and passion, with our students demonstrating their musical prowess and dedication to their craft. Their performances were a testament to the importance of fostering creativity and artistic expression within our school community.

I am immensely proud of our students for their achievements, both inside and outside the classroom. Their dedication to their studies and extracurricular pursuits is inspiring and speaks volumes about their character and potential.

I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our exceptional teachers and staff for their unwavering support and guidance. Their commitment to nurturing the whole student academically, artistically, and personally is commendable and makes all the difference in our students' lives.

As we continue through the busy spring season, let us cherish the moments of growth, learning, and celebration that abound within our school community. Together, we will continue to inspire and empower our students to reach new heights of achievement and excellence.

Let us also remember to end the year strong with our commitment to great attendance each day. Every day of learning counts, and our collective dedication to showing up ready to engage in the learning process ensures that each student has the opportunity to thrive.

Thank you for your partnership in education.

With appreciation,

Principal Clarke

A Message From Principal Clarke

Dear Beech Tree Families,

What a fantastic week it has been! I want to express my gratitude for your participation in the Beech Tree Staff Appreciation celebration week. The Chalk the Walk, beautiful flowers, students wearing red to show staff just how much they are loved and appreciated, uplifting signs, potluck lunch, delicious dessert bar, and other thoughtful gestures brought immense joy to our staff members. It conveyed how much they are valued and appreciated!

Additionally, on Wednesday, April 24th, we had the pleasure of hosting the winners of the Fun Fair Administrative Raffles. Zachary Scherer and Anthony Zoutis won the honor of being Principal and Assistant Principal for the day. They shadowed us by attending meetings, participating in fire drills, visiting classrooms, monitoring the cafeteria, addressing student concerns and many additional duties. They gained valuable insight into our roles as leaders. They did such a great job that Ms. Louder and I may call them in to sub for us in the near future!

As we move into the month of May, students in grades 3-5 will take the Virginia Standards of Learning assessments.  Please carefully review the SOL Testing Schedule. We ask that parents avoid absences and tardies on these days. Partner with us in helping set your student up for success by adhering to an early bedtime the night before the test and eating a protein filled breakfast. Encourage your child to take their time and to do their best. We know that they are going to rock the tests!

Due to the varied schedule during SOL testing, there will not be any Beech Days lunch visitation available in May. However, we will reestablish Beech Days in June to end the year together.

Your ongoing support and partnership are deeply appreciated.

With gratitude,

Principal Clarke

If you feel that there is pertinent information to support your child’s success, please complete this optional Class Placement Input Form by Friday, May 17th. Please note that this system is not intended for families to request specific teachers. Your child’s current classroom teacher, specialists, counselors, and administrators will collaborate to make well-balanced classes. We value and consider your insight into your child’s learning needs.

A Message From Principal Clarke

Dear Beech Tree Families,

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all who joined us for the family field trip this past Saturday, April 14th. Our visit to The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center was wonderful as we explored the remarkable collection of aviation and space artifacts, including the Space Shuttle Discovery, a Blackbird SR-71, and a Concorde, all showcased in two expansive hangars. We had the privilege of engaging with esteemed organizations such as Women in Aviation and Aerospace, Human and Spaceflight, enriching our learning experience. It was inspiring to see our community come together to share in this educational adventure. Students and families laughed and learned together. I look forward to seeing you on the next one!

Your ongoing support and partnership are deeply appreciated.

With gratitude,

Principal Clarke

Solar Eclipse Monday, April 8th

We are all very excited for the upcoming solar eclipse on Monday, April 8th! It's a rare astronomical phenomenon, and one that requires important safety protocols.

Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes. At Beech Tree, we have been able to collect approved eyewear so that students can safely view the eclipse ONLY while wearing the eyewear.

Please help prepare your child for this special event by sharing these important reminders:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce it at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. We will be providing eyewear that has been approved for viewing.
  • Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal for some students), and ends around 4:32 p.m. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

For more details, visit the FCPS Solar Eclipse webpage.

A Message From Principal Clarke

Dear Beech Tree Families,

We are excited to share with you highlights from our recent 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade assembly, "Walk in My Shoes." This special event was designed to develop empathy, creativity, and understanding of others' perspectives. Students focused on the importance of kindness, empathy and inclusivity by imagining themselves in someone else's shoes. We are incredibly proud of our students’ dedication to promoting acceptance and respect in our school community. We believe that events like these not only enrich the learning experience but also help foster a culture of accepting everyone and lifting all. Thank you to everyone involved in organizing and volunteering to make this event successful! It could not have been done without your support.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

With appreciation,

Principal Clarke

New Regulation on Meditation and Silent Reflection Spaces

FCPS has developed Regulation 1502 to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division. The regulation provides guidance for schools on how to manage requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time, and for students to leave school for religious activities.

These spaces are for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis. Families are encouraged to contact their child’s teacher regarding accommodations. View Regulation 1502. Visit FCPS' Religious Accommodations in Schools for Students webpage for more information.

🏫 Advertised Budget Focuses on Schools and Instruction

Investing in excellence means putting our dollars where it matters most — schools and instruction. Nearly 93% of FCPS full-time staff work directly in our schools. And nearly 86% of FCPS’ Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Advertised Budget is dedicated to instructional programs across all grade levels, including special education.

Only 5% of the advertised budget is for general support and central administration. Central office administrators represent only 0.8% of total full-time positions.

For more details on FCPS’ advertised budget, view budget documents, including the FY 2025 Budget Book.

Check out the Budget Calendar for important dates in the budget process as well as opportunities for the community to provide feedback.

A Message From Principal Clarke

Dear Beech Tree Families,

As spring break approaches, I want to extend my warmest wishes for a fantastic break! Our students, teachers, and staff have dedicated themselves tirelessly over the past few months, and I am thrilled for everyone to have a well-deserved rest. For those of you planning to travel, I wish you safe journeys. For those staying local, enjoy a staycation! There are a few important updates to share:

  • I am excited to say that the crosswalk signage has arrived. FCPS has specked out the sign location and we are now awaiting pole placement. We have been informed that underground utility infrastructure has to be finalized prior to the pole installation. Thank you to all as we exercise patience in waiting for the completion of this project.
  • Please be reminded that when visiting a FCPS school a photo ID must be brought with you. We cannot accept a picture of your identification. It is mandatory to bring your license or state-issued ID card. Visitors must scan their driver’s license to obtain a photo-label name tag before entering the school. This requirement is essential for the safety of our students and staff.
  • On April 8th, a partial solar eclipse will be visible from our area. Initially, we purchased eyewear for safe viewing, but the district determined that schools could not use any eyeglasses. They have revised their stance on this decision. However, all eyewear has been returned and is now on backorder. In the effort of safety, please feel free to send your child in with protective eyewear for the eclipse.
  • In preparation for this event, students will be making FCPS recommended safety equipment during their STEAM class that will allow them to safely indirectly view the eclipse. This hands-on activity will not only enhance their understanding of the eclipse but also assist with safety during this rare astronomical event.

We hope everyone has a restful and enjoyable time together during this break.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

With appreciation,

Principal Clarke

🤧 Updated COVID Recommendations

In accordance with the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) respiratory virus guidance, FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) have updated school COVID-19 recommendations.

The COVID-19 isolation period of five days is no longer recommended

New respiratory virus guidance applies to respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Students who have symptoms of, test positive for, or have been diagnosed with a respiratory virus may return to school when the student is fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication; AND the student’s symptoms have improved or resolved.

Students should follow additional precautions as outlined per the CDC upon resumption of normal activities.

Should I Send My Child to School?

Please refer to the chart on this attendance webpage if your child is experiencing symptoms or illnesses, and you are unsure if they should go to school.

Thank you for helping keep our students and staff healthy.

Hi Beech Tree Parents!

We’re seeking energetic parent volunteers for Thursday, April 4th as we bring Walk in My Shoes to Beech Tree!

The Walk in My Shoes program's mission is to create a more welcoming school environment so that all students feel included, understood, and supported. We encourage parents of children with ADHD, Autism (sensory processing), Food Allergy, or English as a Second Language (ESOL) to sign up to volunteer. For the ESOL parent volunteer, we ask parents who speak a language other than Spanish and Vietnamese since they are our dominant languages at Beech Tree.

While this event is only being offered for students in 3rd to 5th grade, we encourage parents from all grade levels to sign up to volunteer. Our goal is to share a modified version of the curriculum with our Kindergarten to 2nd grade students during their class counseling lessons with Ms. Torres.

There will be a 45-minute virtual training prior to the event. If you have questions, please email Penny, our PTA President at [email protected] or Ms. Torres, our School Counselor at [email protected].

A Message From Principal Clarke

Dear Beech Tree Families,

The past week has been truly amazing with the weather being so pleasant and beautiful. I hope that you were able to get outside with your children, friends or neighbors and enjoy the fresh air. As we all know, being outdoors is a great way to rejuvenate ourselves.

I am excited to announce that our biggest event of the year, the PTA Fun Fair, is taking place tomorrow from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. It is open to everyone, and I would encourage you to attend. There will be a variety of fun-filled activities, such as amazing raffle baskets, cake walks, food trucks, community resources, and new exciting games. It is going to be a fantastic day! I hope to see you there.

As we approach Spring Break, please be reminded that it is from March 25-29. The main office will be closed during that time. We will eagerly welcome your children back to school on Wednesday, April 3rd. Please note that student attendance is essential. Studies have shown that even two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let's work together to ensure that your children have a successful school year.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

With appreciation,

Principal Clarke

How to Help Kids Balance Phones and Screens with Sleep Tips for managing TV, tablets, phones, and tech so your kids can get a good night's sleep.

Phones and devices are a major part of a kid's daily routine, and that extends to nighttime as well. In fact, over half of preteens and teens surveyed by Common Sense reported using their phones overnight.

Not getting enough sleep can affect children's physical and mental health. Staying up too late can even impact their attention, behavior, and development. When it comes to screens and sleep, there are a few things to remember:

  • Blue light at night interrupts natural sleep rhythms. So it's best to avoid it before bed. (Blue light from the sun keeps us alert during the day. The highly concentrated blue light from screens does the same thing.)
  • Just using a device is stimulating. Using screens before bed makes it harder to fall asleep, because they keep your brain alert when it should be winding down.

Young people can face a lot of pressure during the day. So it's understandable that many turn to their phones to relax. Try to help your kids reflect on their tech experiences without judgment. Then, check out these ideas to support them in balancing their tech use at night:

  • Limit using screens before bed. Whenever possible, shut everything off—including phones and tablets—at least an hour before bedtime. Set a screen-free routine with your child, like reading or listening to podcasts, to help them settle in for the night. And for older kids who might be doing online homework late, help them find a routine that calms their brain and body down after they turn off their device.
  • Block the blue light. Make sure kids are using "night mode" on their devices after sunset. Apple and Android devices have options to adjust display color based on time of day.
  • Turn off notifications. Make sure your kids turn off their notifications at night. You can use built-in features like Apple's Screen Time or Google's Family Link to set limits.
  • Keep phones out of the bedroom or sleeping area at night. Teens tell us that putting their phone in another room overnight is the best way to help them resist the temptation to use it—and this leads to better sleep. But some kids use their phones to play background noise or music to fall asleep. If this is the case for your child, try other options, like a white noise machine. Or have them turn off notifications and set "do not disturb" on other apps overnight so the phone's only job is to play music.
  • Talk about tech expectations. Use a Family Tech Planner to create rules for how everyone uses devices. This will give kids a say and develop a shared understanding of how they can make the most out of entertainment and tech time.
  • Walk the walk. Of course, adults can also have a hard time putting down their devices. Whenever you can, model healthy tech habits that you want your kids to pick up.

🩹 Measles Is Preventable

Measles is making headlines as the number of cases nationwide has topped 40, with three confirmed cases in people living in or traveling through the National Capital Region.

The good news is that measles is preventable through vaccination! Vaccines help teach the immune system how to defend against germs, helping to build up natural defenses. Give your child the best protection against measles with two doses of the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine. Visit the Fairfax County Health Department website to find out more about measles.

Extended Hours at Immunization Clinics

To help parents/caregivers obtain vaccinations for their children, the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) will offer immunization clinics with extended hours:

Parents/caregivers should make an appointment but a limited number of walk-ins will be accepted. Please call 703-246-7100 to schedule an appointment.

Learn more about vaccinating your child and find community resources to support their health and well-being.

Note: All students enrolling in public and private schools in Virginia are required to be adequately immunized per the Code of Virginia.

#InvestInExcellence ✨

The average amount of funds transferred from Fairfax County to FCPS was 52.6% of county disbursements from Fiscal Years 2019-2023. It dipped to 51.6% in 2024. The county’s budget proposal for next year would transfer 51.4% of total disbursements. If the county returns to 52.6% for the upcoming year, that would be $63 million more as an investment in excellence for our schools.

We are in the middle of the annual budget process, which includes opportunities for you to give feedback.

A Message From Principal Clarke

Dear Beech Tree Families,

Recently, you should have received an email from Fairfax County Public Schools regarding our Family Engagement Survey which will be open from Sunday, March 3, to Friday, March 22.  These results will be reported out across the division to help school principals and school leaders to make informed decisions regarding each individual school.  At Beech Tree, Mrs. Louder and I will receive a detailed report that we will be sharing out with our teachers as part of our continuing plans for improvement.

We sincerely value this feedback, and our promise is we will read all the feedback results, and carefully consider how to use this feedback to improve our school and our community.  If you have time, please take a moment to take the family engagement survey by searching your email for this subject, “Your feedback matters! Complete our FCPS Family Engagement Survey”.

Thank you again for your feedback contributions and we look forward to hearing from our families.  If you are having trouble finding the survey or have any questions about the survey, you can find more resources and access the survey itself using this site: Family Engagement Survey

Update News regarding the signage for the crosswalk by the Kiss and Ride Entrance. We have been in contact with FCPS Groundskeeper Senior Supervisor Mr. Lopez, and we are pleased to inform you that the signage has been ordered. We kindly remind you to exercise caution and avoid obstructing the crosswalk when using it. Thank you for your cooperation in ensuring everyone's safety.

Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour on Sunday, March 10, at 2 a.m., when daylight saving time begins! We are excited to have additional daylight in the evenings!

Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

With appreciation,

Principal Clarke
