School Bus Safety

FCPS transportation employees go the extra mile, teaching students vital safety lessons. From boarding the bus to emergency procedures, their dedication ensures every ride is a safe journey.

This week, our students ranging from kindergarten to third grade were educated on the vital topic of bus safety through an informative video presentation presented by the FCPS transportation team. Following this, they were able to put their knowledge into practical use during a genuine bus evacuation drill. Our 4th and 5th-grade patrols underwent training on emergency procedures, such as activating emergency brakes and effectively communicating via radio during times of crisis, all while taking part in a comprehensive bus evacuation drill. Below are some important tips for school bus safety.

School Bus Safety Tips

The most dangerous place for bus passengers is the 10-foot area around the outside of the bus. We call this the "danger zone" because this is where the school bus driver may not be able to see passengers. Here are some simple rules on the school bus and at the bus stop to stay safe:

  • Be on time at the bus stop.
  • Stand back from the curb.
  • Walk to and from the bus. Do not run.
  • Await your turn to get on or off the bus. Do not push and shove.
  • Stay in your seat unless the driver tells you otherwise.
  • Keep the aisle in the bus clear.
  • Talk quietly to the people sitting around you. This helps the bus driver focus on the road.
  • Demonstrate respect for the driver. His or her job is to look out for your safety.
  • Take at least 10 giant steps before turning when you get off the bus. This is so the driver can see you.
  • Wait for the driver's okay before crossing the street.
  • Cross the street at least 10 feet in front of the bus. This is so that the driver can see you.

Together we can work to keep all of our students safe. Thank you for your partnership in education.
