5th Grade Integrated Reading and Writing (IRW) - SOL exam
The Virginia State Education Integrated Reading and Writing (IRW) exam is a component of the Standards of Learning (SOL) reading tests administered in Virginia. Specifically, it's designed to assess students' ability to both comprehend informational text and effectively communicate their understanding in writing. This exam, which is now a part of the grade 5, grade 8, and end-of-course (EOC) reading SOL tests, presents students with a non-fiction passage, followed by multiple-choice and technology-enhanced questions, and then an "invitation to write" based on the passage. Essentially, it integrates reading comprehension with written expression, requiring students to demonstrate their ability to synthesize information and articulate their thoughts in response to what they've read.
